Who broke ranks: Nasdaq-100 correlation, the last three months against the year before

Stocks of one group usually move together. This compares, for each of the 4,851 pairs among 99 stocks, how closely the two moved together over the last 63 sessions (Aug 4 to Oct 30) with the 252 sessions before (from Aug 1). A pair that drifted apart is where a hedge stops hedging and a pairs trade stops working; a group that loosens as a whole is a market of single stories.

How tightly the group moves as one

The average correlation of all pairs over a rolling 63 sessions. Now 0.08; the middle of the year, 0.13. High: everything moves together. Low: each stock on its own story.

Read it as where to look, not as proof. With 63 sessions a single pair’s correlation is uncertain by about ±0.1, and among 4,851 pairs some large changes appear by chance alone; “lowest of 5 quarters” marks a pair whose last three months sit below every quarter of the year before, and “mostly one session” a pair whose change comes from a single day on which the two went far apart (often a company report) — open the pair to see it. Readings: shifted = fell by more than 0.20 · minor shift = by 0.05 to 0.20 · negligible = by less than 0.05 · steady = unchanged or a little closer · strengthened = rose by 0.30 or more. Not in the study: SPCX (listed for 98 sessions — the study needs 321); HONA (listed for 97 sessions — the study needs 321).

Where option dealers stand in the Nasdaq-100 stocks

The site’s own subject: after every close each stock’s option book is read for which side the dealers are on, where the walls are and what move is priced. Added up over the 101 names of this room:

Moving more than their options priced

The day’s change against the one-day move each stock’s options price.

At the walls

The price against last night’s call wall and put wall — the strikes where the option book is heaviest.

9 stocks of this room sat within 1.5% of a wall at the last close, and 10 closed through one. Which ones, where the walls are, and how far the price is from them right now is on the page as soon as it has loaded.

With the pack = the stock’s average correlation with the others over the last three months, and its change from the year before. Move ÷ priced = the day’s change over the one-day move the options price. Members also get three more columns: the price against last night’s call wall, put wall and gamma flip.

What this room is, and how to read it

The Nasdaq-100 is the index of the largest companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange, banks and other financial companies left out. It holds about a hundred companies — 101 tickers today, because a company with two share classes appears twice — and it is weighted by size, so a handful of very large names decide most of its move. That is why the page shows two things side by side: the group weighted by size, and the average stock.

What is the Nasdaq-100 War Room?

One page that shows the whole Nasdaq-100 at once: a heat map of its 101 stocks, the day’s biggest gains and losses, which stocks add most to the index’s move, how many stand above their averages, which pairs of stocks stopped moving together, and how option dealers are positioned in each name.

Which stocks are in it?

The 101 tickers of the Nasdaq-100 as Nasdaq publishes them; the list is read again every week, so a stock that joins or leaves the index appears or disappears here by itself.

Are the prices live?

While the US market is open the figures refresh about once a minute on delayed quotes (about 15 minutes behind); after the close the page shows the closing prices, and every night it is rebuilt from end-of-day data. The line under the title always says which of the three you are looking at.

How is the heat map sized and coloured?

Each tile is one stock. Its size is the stock’s weight in the index — which is not plain company size: the index holds its very largest names down. The weights are read from the daily holdings of a fund that tracks the index. Its colour is the change over the period you pick — today, five days, one month or this year. “Equal” draws every stock the same size, so the small names can be read too.

What does “lifting the group” mean?

A stock’s change multiplied by its weight: how many percentage points of the group’s move come from that one stock. A small gain in a very heavy name can lift the group more than a large gain in a light one — which is why an index can rise while most of its stocks fall.

What is the correlation shift?

For every pair of stocks the page compares how closely the two moved together over the last 63 sessions (about three months) with the 252 sessions before that (a year). A pair whose correlation fell by more than 0.20 is called shifted; one that rose by 0.30 or more, strengthened. A shift is a place to look, not a proof: with three months of data a single pair’s correlation is uncertain by about a tenth either way, and among thousands of pairs a few large changes appear by chance.

What do long gamma and short gamma mean?

They describe how the dealers who sold or bought the options must hedge. Long gamma: they trade against a move, which tends to calm it. Short gamma: they trade with the move, which can let it stretch. It is estimated from open interest after each close, and it describes positioning — it is not a forecast of direction.

What is “moved more than its options priced”?

Implied volatility is the size of move the option market charges for. Divided down to one day it gives a priced one-day move; the page compares the stock’s actual change with it. A stock at 2× has moved twice what its options priced for a day.

Is this investment advice?

No. The page describes what prices and option positioning are, for research and education. Nothing on it is a forecast, a target or a recommendation.

From the room to one stock

A room shows the field. The Viewer opens any one of these stocks completely: its option chain, the walls and the gamma flip over time, implied volatility, the dealers’ gamma, vanna and charm — 121 daily series, each against the stock’s own history.
